Bill Veillette Moves on to the Northeast Document Conservation Center
9/23/2009

Bill Veillette, Executive Director of the New Hampshire Historical Society since 2004, has left his position at the end of August to head the Northeast Document Conservation Center in Andover, Massachusetts. Under Veillette's leadership, the Society adopted a new business plan focused on improving stewardship of its vast collection of artifacts and archives; expanding access to its collections and research resources; and increasing support services to the state's 206 local historical societies.

Bill also served on the New Hampshire Preservation Alliance board of directors from 2002 to 2008. The organization grew in size and effectiveness during his tenure as Chairman and Treasurer. He also launched the Alliance's easement committee and secured the organization's first preservation easement in 2003. Veillette also co-founded the Heritage Commission of Amherst, NH, and serves as a trustee of Historic New England, board member of New Hampshire's Land and Community Heritage Investment Program and treasurer of the Historical Society of Amherst.

"Bill has been a fabulous force in the expansion of the New Hampshire historic preservation movement and alignment of our work with conservation, museum, housing and other interests," said Jennifer Goodman, executive director of the N.H. Preservation Alliance. "We are very pleased that he will remain active in the field and involved in Preservation Alliance projects.

The Historical Society's interim executive director is Michael Sununu, and its board has launched a national search for a new director. The Northeast Document Conservation Center is a nonprofit, regional conservation center specializing in the preservation of paper-based materials for libraries, archives, museums, historical societies, and other cultural institutions, as well as private collectors. NEDCC recently performed conservation treatment for documents written by George Washington, correspondence by Ernest Hemingway, Abraham Lincoln's family bible, Babe Ruth's personal scrapbooks, and journals carried on the Lewis and Clark expedition.
