Cold Weather is Coming...
The Old Farmer's Almanac predicts a colder than normal winter. If you are an old house owner use this fall checklist to get your house ready before the winter weather strikes.
Caulk cracks and holes around doors, windows and penetrations in the exterior of your house. An energy audit can find problem areas.
Replace screens in storm doors with glass inserts. Check to make sure storm windows and doors function properly and have a good seal when closed. Make sure all exterior and basement doors have door sweeps.
Have heating appliances and working chimneys checked/cleaned. Properly seal flues that are not in use.
Vacuum and clean radiators and baseboards to improve their efficiency.
Change batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and programmable thermostats.
Seal basement bulkhead with an added insulated door at the basement wall. (Could be as simple as 2” rigid foam).
Stack your firewood near your house for easy access, but not in your house, basement or porch, to reduce the chance of bringing unwanted visitors (bugs) inside.
Clean out gutters and downspouts of leaves and debris.
Turn off water feed and open valve to outdoor faucets, or install freeze-proof faucets.
Place roof rake and snow shovels where they are easily accessible.
Wear an extra layer. Down vests, wool sweaters and warm socks will help you be ready for whatever Old Man Winter has to offer!
