Cold Weather is Coming...

The Old Farmer's Almanac predicts a colder than normal winter. If you are an old house owner use this fall checklist to get your house ready before the winter weather strikes.

  • Caulk cracks and holes around doors, windows and penetrations in the exterior of your house. An energy audit can find problem areas.

  • Replace screens in storm doors with glass inserts. Check to make sure storm windows and doors function properly and have a good seal when closed. Make sure all exterior and basement doors have door sweeps.

  • Have heating appliances and working chimneys checked/cleaned. Properly seal flues that are not in use.

  • Vacuum and clean radiators and baseboards to improve their efficiency.

  • Change batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and programmable thermostats.

  • Seal basement bulkhead with an added insulated door at the basement wall. (Could be as simple as 2” rigid foam).

  • Stack your firewood near your house for easy access, but not in your house, basement or porch, to reduce the chance of bringing unwanted visitors (bugs) inside.

  • Clean out gutters and downspouts of leaves and debris.

  • Turn off water feed and open valve to outdoor faucets, or install freeze-proof faucets.

  • Place roof rake and snow shovels where they are easily accessible.

  • Wear an extra layer. Down vests, wool sweaters and warm socks will help you be ready for whatever Old Man Winter has to offer!
