The New Hampshire Preservation Alliance strengthens communities and local economies by supporting and encouraging the revitalization and protection of historic buildings and places.

2025 marks our 40th anniversary!

Just over 40 years ago, a task force of civic leaders sowed the seeds of a statewide historic preservation nonprofit for New Hampshire. The Preservation Alliance has been fortunate to have had many committed and generous leaders among its networks of board members, staff teams, advisors and supporters for the past 40 years. Through differing political climates, strong and weak economies, sunny days and bad weather, we have helped rescue and revive irreplaceable landmarks, support old home and barn owners and enthusiasts, increase preservation activity in communities across the state, and grow the movement of people who care.

We’ve put together a video retrospective celebrating our origins, important events over the past 40 years, and our plans for the future. We invite you to watch it below.

As part of the Preservation Alliance’s exploration of its first 40 years, we created these lists of boards and staff. Lists are from 1985-2025 and are organized in alphabetical order. It’s a work in progress!

Thank you to our 40th Anniversary sponsors:

 Our History

The New Hampshire Preservation Alliance began in 1985 as Inherit New Hampshire (INH). It was born as a response to concerns about rapid growth that was eroding the character of traditional New Hampshire communities and landscapes.  A task force of business and civic leaders envisioned an active, statewide organization to advance preservation policy and address the needs of local communities and individuals. Many other states formed similar organizations around this time, the result of national historic preservation legislation in the 1960s, a growing environmental movement, and renewed interest in history following the nation's bicentennial in 1976.

After fifteen years of steady growth, INH had raised its profile throughout the state, professionalized its operations and expanded its membership.  In 2000 the name was changed to the New Hampshire Preservation Alliance to underscore both its historic preservation mission and its reliance on many partners, working collaboratively, to preserve, revitalize and protect historic structures throughout the state.

Our Mission

The organization's impact has continued to grow as a result of programs and services tailored to meet changing constituent needs. The New Hampshire Preservation Alliance is now a highly regarded voice for preservation, and a resource for hundreds of members, partners, colleagues, and the media.  We have been part of successful preservation efforts across the state, helping to save and revive individual buildings, improve downtown vitality and protect community character. We have been strong advocates for preservation-friendly preservation policies at both the state and federal level.

We welcome your participation at any level. Attend an event, support us with a donation, nominate a local landmark for our Seven to Save list - the possibilities for engagement are endless. Become a part of the New Hampshire Preservation Alliance community today and do your part to save, protect and revitalize these important structures for generations to come.
