George E. Whitcomb, a descendant of one of Swanzey’s first manufacturing families, built Whitcomb Hall as a “public hall” in 1916. It was an important architectural feature of West Swanzey and the hub of village life for generations but was closed in 1988 because of code issues.  With this rehabilitation, it once again serves as a centerpiece of community civic, social and cultural activities.

The Town sought the advice of qualified historic preservation professionals early in the planning process for Whitcomb Hall’s rehabilitation. Armed with findings and recommendations of a building assessment report, the Town launched a “Rebuild A Hall” campaign.  The Whitcomb Hall Committee and the Board of Selectmen engaged the community through fundraising meals, townwide holiday events, and various recreational activities. The annual Chicken BBQ held in August on the lawn is typically attended by over 250 community members and raises thousands of dollars. For the past eight years Swanzey Fire Department has hosted a Very Swanzey Christmas at Whitcomb Hall, which gathers hundreds of people for a family friendly community event.

This project included adding a fire suppression system to the entire building and adding accessibility from the first to the second floor. On the upper floor, the work rehabilitation of original tin ceiling and walls, stage and balcony areas, refinishing floors, as well as compliance with safety, code, and other requirements.

This award recognizes a multi-year effort to restore life to this beloved and useful landmark.  It is the only building of its kind in the Town of Swanzey, with the capacity to serve as a large gathering place and a rental venue.
