Maintaining Historic Masonry in a Changing Climate

So you have a historic house with a fieldstone foundation or brick facade that needs masonry repairs but you’re not sure where to start? Join us at Strawbery Banke Museum with preservation mason John Wastrom and Rodney Rowland, Director of Environmental Sustainability, Strawbery Banke Museum, to learn the do’s and don’ts of historic masonry repair. Whether you plan to do the needed work yourself or hire a contractor, knowing best treatment practices given the specific conditions of your home is critical before you move forward with the work.

Rodney will present some of the challenges the historic masonry at Strawbery Banke is experiencing. John will follow offering an illustrated presentation discussing the importance of annual maintenance, and repair strategies for historic masonry. He will cover the importance of a preliminary assessment to identify any water or structural-related issues, best preservation practices for historic masonry, appropriate cleaning methods, recommended mortar types for repointing, and more. After the presentation, John and Rodney will guide participants on a tour of the museum buildings to explore the strategies the museum uses on their historic masonry.

There will be ample time for Q&A with our experts after the presentation and on the tour. Space is limited, so sign up today! NHPA and SBM members - $10, Non-members - $20, NHPA Membership Special (workshop + 1 year membership) - $35
